To Be Safety In The Kitchen

Always practice safety when you are using kitchen equipment and tools!

I want You To cook with adult supervision and follow these simple guidelines:

  • Always use hot pads to handle hot or warm items. Anything you remove from the oven, stove, microwave or other heat-based appliance will be hot and will stay hot for a while.

  • Remember that steam can cause burns, too! Ask an adult to lift aluminum foil or lids from hot items.

  • Keep pan handles turned toward the middle of the stove to avoid accidental bumps which can cause the pan to fall.

  • Always ask an adult's help and supervision when using sharp tools and electric appliances.

  • Keep your hands clean to ensure that you handle food safely.

  • Never remove boiling or hot items from the stove yourself - ask an adult's help.

  • Never leave the kitchen when something is cooking.

  • If you're walking with a sharp knife, walk slowly and keep the sharp point facing down. Never run with sharp tools.

  • Make sure your hands are dry before you plug in or unplug an appliance.

  • Certain foods require refrigeration. Don't leave them out, or they can turn.

  • Don't wear loose clothing which can get caught on appliances and be dangerous near an open flame.

  • Clean any spills right away. Spills on the floor can cause you or someone else to fall.

  • If you have long hair, remember to tie it back so it won't get in the way.

  • Remember to turn all appliances off when you're finished.

The Important Five Food Groups For Kids

The Five Food Groups

Your body needs many kinds of food to help you feel well and be healthy. That's why it's a good idea to make sure that you have several servings a day from each of the five food groups. They are:
Breads and Cereals
The grains and other ingredients in these foods give your body the carbohydrates it needs, as well as iron, fiber and other important elements. Foods in this category include rice, cereals, breads and pasta.

Fruits and Vegetables
Mother Nature put vitamins A and C in the foods in this group, which taste good and are good for you! Four or more servings a day from this food group will give you more vitamins and fiber to keep your energy levels high! Foods in this category include tomatoes, green beans, bananas and oranges.

Meat
Your body is like an engine that needs fuel, and meat "fuels" you with protein, iron and other essential nutrients. You should eat at least two servings a day from this food group. Foods in this category include beef, chicken, fish, turkey and pork - plus eggs and nuts!

Milk
Milk and milk products contain calcium and protein, which make your bones strong and help you grow into a healthy adult. At least three servings a day are recommended. Foods in this category include milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream.

Other Foods
Not every food fits easily into one of the groups we've already listed. Items in this group may contain a lot of fat or sugar and aren't as healthy as the foods we've discussed so far. For that reason, it's recommended that you limit your intake of them. Foods in this category include soda, butter, margarine, candy and processed snack foods.
